The project entails: an ibot, which is a bio-computer like entity, mini-manufacturing factory of nanobots, an intelligent language interface, a DNA library, and a facilitator to collate new DNA structures using a world wide web type of technology. The subterranean ibot is connected to a western salsify plant, which disperses its parachute-like seeds with nanobots inside by winds taking them from their resting place. These fragile seeds can literally be carried over valleys and mountains.
These nanobots each report back DNA structures to the ibot by means of satellite. At release the nanobots purpose it to collect and report DNA, also a communicative medium. Upon landing on a potential subject the nanobot will attach to the subject, gather, and transmit the DNA structure to the ibot via a satellite. This information is entered into the ibot's library. The nanobot sends this information with a reference to the subjects electrical, magnetic, and vibratory properties (identifiers) in nanobot and ibot language. The interface and intelligent language capabilities of the ibot then translate the DNA with its identifier to a language more easily comprehensible by humans.
From this input the ibot builds its own representation of what the subject might be like. This is not a virtual model in the strict sense, but an abstract idea of the ibot. Using its linguistic intelligence the ibot reports to people and cyborgs alike, through the internet-like all-in-one interface of the future, all the possible DNA reconfigurations its has calculated. It then references the current language database looking for clues about how to express what the new DNA and reapplied DNA will be called.
Via the ibots World Wide Web connection people suggest to the ibot what DNA structures mean what word, that is what the DNA structure does and how to invoke it. An oscillation cycle, (like the one in Research & Details) which is a democratic-like form of deciding, that includes the ibot's definition in terms of the nanobots it has in the world, and the number of people who want a certain definition will decide the meaning. From only the existing library of structures received from the nanobots sent to the ibot, plus the reconfigured DNA sequences that are attempts by the ibot to create the perfect DNA, we could propose that the ibot focus on a particular part of the DNA structure which presents symbiotic potential
If people wanted they could potentially propose DNA formations that are negative to symbiosis. Anyways, this process could mean giving the western salsify the genetic code to better withstand the toxins of civilization (even though it already has an aptitude at this), or an ability to communicate , or have the parachute part of the seed dismantle when the nanobot senses moisture (thus dropping the seed into fertile ground), or flowers that smell like a smell that doesn't yet exist, or transforming the DNA so that the plant processes happen very quickly. Choosing the last choice for instance would allow for changes made to the DNA to have almost instantaneous results, giving the project a very musical quality.
At this point new words will be necessary to identify the new type of DNA structure, once again referring to the feedback loop of this project that undermines traditional control. Also, the nanobots will be sensitive to sound waves associated with the voice. When physically near a nanobot in a plant an interactor could specify the keyword of "transform" and then invoke a sort of command to the particular nanobot. Also, a keyword of "meaning" will allow for a change in reference to it's dynamic library that associates words (besides the key ones) to DNA structures available. New words can be created or new definitions. When the nanobot and ibot transmit to each other the nanobots dictionary and library are updated according to what people put into the ibots language interface as meanings of words.
Once the ibot has perished people will communicate directly with the nanobots. The nanobots will keep the DNA knowledge they have and add samples to it instead of sending it to the ibot. Returning to the newly formed or reapplied DNA structure in the ibot. They will be sent to a nanobot within a seed that has been planted, depending on the plants seasonality. Nanobots that do not get planted within the seeds are subject to death. Non-seeded nanobots (nano-martyrs) just report DNA and eventually devour their life source of sucrose from the seed. The other nanobots will then perform the necessary DNA altercation to transform the plant into a new one. A transmitter is then put into all the new seed(s) just before the plant blooms (if its new structure allows this) by the nanobot, except one seed where the nanobot will reside. The transmitters will send signals to the ibot via satellite for people to make their own nanobots, find the transmitting seed, and to insert their personal nanobots.
Using wind and seed to disperse these nano-explorers/engineers of micro and macro renders an intoxicating reevaluation of symbiosis. Traditionally wind is associated with change, yet the very nature of the transport vessel (seeds) represents the transformational agenda of this project, after all the western salsify is considered a weed. A weed that is prominent along roads and waste sites that symbolizes the symbiotic potential inherent in all matter.
In this project I reflect on the possibility that in the future the value of any thing is not considered in a dichotomous manner. It is not only an aesthetic for humans, but also an aesthetic in and of the environment; consequently it is an aesthetic for artificial intelligence and/or cyborgs as well. The distinction of man, nature, and machine is blurred beyond recognition by the emphasis of this project as interactors will be transformed along with the plants DNA. The process of manufacturing nanobots and sending them into a world within worlds symbolizes a new frontier of manufacturing.
The nanobots are not the end product but a means to find uniqueness and recreate the environment with technology in an overtly obvious process. Using the satellite to transmit data might cause one to reflect on the notion of space and how we define worlds within worlds (sub-atomic to Earth to Universe) and the triviality of it considering the distance in relation to the nanobots size. Introducing astrological phenomenon to the nanobots (see research) brings the heavens down to earth and time as we know it is trivialized. The nanobots in there smallness are so close yet so far. Invisible to the naked eye the nanobots are analogous to social structures unseen by most (those without the proper tools). The material manifestation of the nanobots takes the analogy of these unseen social structures (usually related to power/control) and reveals them in a manner that is comprehendable by the interaction available with them.
The feedback loops indicated in the diagram above then subject the interactor to a new systems aesthetic. Once the effect of DNA transformation has occurred then the very plant that has been transformed can be referenced to the experience of past, present, and future. Experience and perspective dissolve into that ether which is between shadow and light. All senses at once can be facilitated through the projects potential. Subjectivity spirals in chaotic countless directions. Something close to objectivity is grasped for in the nanobots' random collection of DNA. A new form of reproduction emerges as it is up to human, machine, nature, and environmental elements as to what is born of each seed.
The feedback loop of the project grows in complexity and I hope it reaches a point where control by any one part/species is negligible. The potential chaotic implications of this project call for people to get involved with technology unlike before. Intrusion is explored and the art offers a new perspective. The shifting balance between chaos and order will be a part of everyday language. A new politics of democracy will emerge as everything in the environment has an "equal" part to play in the shaping of the environment. Politicians go to the wayside, as it will become more imperative than ever to contribute to the project I am initiating. It may take literally millions of these seeds to find DNA more complex than that of bacteria.
This aspect of the project puts forth the idea of a new theory of evolution, which is flexible to our [by our I mean humans, plants (to a degree), animals, machines, etc. and will thus refer to "our" as such] desires. The subterranean ibot is a reference to our roots, the primitive, our heart, our soul. It also questions our ideas of mortality as the ibot and nano-martyrs join the cycle of life. Allowing for seeds to return to the soil after the journey hints at the necessity to recreate our being. Coupled with the use of satellite technology, hence space, there is a sense of being both in and outside of our bodies. Language is critical in the process as it speaks of neither truth nor lies. Biotechnology in this project seeks to extend a new abstract self, instead of reinforcing our parasitic state of mind and body in this Plastic Age.
If the human race could be defined in one word I would choose we are the sublime, if I had two words I would say parasitic as well. Three words I would say misguided. Knowing this I conclude that the subjugation of the human will through corporate, government, church, and military institutions will be challenged in the future unlike before. Revolutions in the past have confronted many of these issues, so how might the next revolution be different?
I propose that human pollution will bring people together unlike before, because of the truly global consequences (of course, only once pollutions disastrous effects are incontrovertible to politician, television reporter, and coastal dweller alike). Utilization of networks and a new language will be a foundation of breaking stereotypes that distinguish race, country, religion, and gender thus bringing people together.
There will have been movements that have failed because they implement techniques either out-dated or similar to the institutions', yet lacking the support. At first humans will look to our leaders and scientists to resolve the situation. They will support a new energy source that is clean, but with one catch, a few elite will control the energy source, much like the oil fields of today. Already oil companies are making small advances to control the future energy and it appears they will not make the transfer in time.
This will be an attempt to control the development of clean energy technologies that might otherwise be created and shared for little to no cost. Biomass seems to be the direction that future energy use is headed, so energy companies will find a way to implement technology in a way that the public will not have "free" access to biomass converters (perhaps, by destroying most vegetation on Earth through pollution). Much like today how it is illegal to manipulate oil based engines in automobiles. The failure of the industrial revolution and fear of catastrophic death will cause certain rebels to stand up against the potential control of introducing a new energy source consolidated by the elite.
At this time most people will be policing themselves in a manner reminiscent of "1984" to the extreme, much more so than at present. Yet, fear of death through human pollution of the environment coupled with information efficiency and AI(technology in its extreme sense as viewed by humans fearing machines) will lead to an openness of technology in general to help solve the problem at hand. Disorder during the environmental catastrophes will give people of the revolution the perfect opportunity to strike at the heart of human greed.
Furthermore, people/cyborgs will have an all-in-one technology device that would be similar to the internet, cell phone, personal computer, etc., all wrapped up in one device. I believe a semi-piezoelectric crystal will be used for interfacing the world with these technologies. This crystal technology will be a thrust to moving towards a new type of language. This language will take some time to develop, but it will involve abstract ideas being transferred by vibratory means to another subject with little to no depreciation. In its infancy this language will have the most dramatic effect, cognizing interactors to the dissolution of dichotomous thoughts which rule current language. It is through this new linguistic tool that people will communicate truthfully. When truth and lies are combined as one, we will cease to be human.
Moving on, in the chaos of environmental catastrophe the few rebels will take the opportunity to transform the human race's purpose on the planet. Projects much like my own will start to surface and be carried out. Of course, there is always the threat of apocalypse at any given time in history. More than likely humans will live out an environmental disaster without transformation. What sets this particular revolution apart is giving each person a part in making the world theirs through working together in the proposed project which gives the world a renewed sense of magic. The god-like ability of talking to the environment and having it transform will invite humans to think responsibly. My project demands votes to be cast or the world will be a sea of self-similar western salsify's.
Although, I conceptualized the project before being introduced to Natalie Jeremijenko, the nanobots are much like the genetically cloned trees in "One Tree" , in that they are all the "same". Their uniqueness comes with not only how the environment plays a role upon their progress, yet also how the nanobots play a more apparent role in translating/transforming the environment. Obviously, one could distinguish metal and organic between mine and Jeremijenko's project, yet this project attempts to move away from such distinctions.
Nanobots will traverse the Phloem cells in the plant. The Phloem conduct food from the leaves to other parts of the plant. Specifically, the nanobots will be interested in the sucrose/glucose or sugar compounds produced by the plant. This will be the nanobots energy source. Using biomass (in this case biosmall) as a means to produce mechanical and electrical energy is documented as a viable source for households.
The nanobots body will be largely constructed of a crystal that has piezoelectric properties. Embedded upon the crystal will be all the hardware, including processor, transistors, the wiring between components, etc. Circling the nanobot will be quarks/atoms that will create a new gravitational field giving the nanobot ease of maneuverability. Once, the satellite and ibot indicate that the nanobot has stopped it will sample the DNA of a subject. The nanobot will be resting at the bottom of the seed and will extract a sample of the organism, through apparently.
The Piezoelectric crystal will be the featured means for the nanobot to negotiate with its surroundings. Piezoelectricity allows for the conversion of mechanical energy to electrical energy and vice versa. Based on research in quantum physics it is known that everything vibrates. Through these vibrations/frequencies it can be ascertained where in the plant structure the nanobot is by mapping the frequencies of the different parts of the plants. The crystal will also serve as the means for sending and receiving signals from the ibot in a similar fashion as telecommunications of today.
While it might be logical to use atomic vibrations to power the nanobots, I choose to have the nanobots feed off the sucrose/sugar compounds inside the seed and plant.
The nanobots will be programmed in a traditional sense except that their language interface will be intelligent. When the ibot's mortality is achieved it will be necessary for the nanobots to be able to adapt to changes in language. By invoking certain words an interactor with the nanobot will be able to change the meaning of the nanobots vocabulary and add new DNA structures. Also, once the ibot has perished DNA samples found by the nanobots will be stored in the nanobots memory/language intelligence center. While the ibot still exists though these changes in language can be overridden by collective meaning of language. The ibot's death represents a more profound sense of responsibility upon those who interact with the environment and hence the nanobots within the environment that are changing it.
Artificial Intelligent machines will be able to access the nanobot in a similar method as speech recognition, depending on the AI's language. Perhaps, computer language code will suit the need.
Conversion of noise into DNA alterations of potential seeds can be turned on in the nanobot. This allows environmental noise to somewhat randomly cause the nanobot to alter a particular part of the DNA, as chosen by interactors, in a translation of such noise and vibrations. This references Karpens "Solo/Tutti" in that the all-in-one device discussed in the Background section will be able to be interfaced with the nanobots by this method, thus beckoning interactors to master a new vibratory and/or optical language to create music with the plant and nanobot. Part II of the project would use other input means to vary the DNA.
The ibot sends the nanobot information on how many people are on the earth. This number will represent the astrological equivalent of a month. After a certain sun-like quark has revolved around the nanobot the amount of times that there are people it will transmit its data to the ibot.
These miniature scientists seem to be as objective as the methods they use, yet they hold no values. Any DNA is good DNA in the sense that the nanobot will report DNA information only from the source it is at. The traditional methods of measuring by human scientists are cast aside. Chaos is the tool which dictates what is measured. The "how" of the DNA measurement thus becomes unimportant. Basically, the nanobot will just analyze the DNA code and send it to the ibot. 50-100 years from now processors will easily handle this amount of information.
This plant is biannual that occasionally acts like an annual. It is commonly found around pastures, agricultural areas, roadsides, waste sites, disturbed areas, fenced rows, and is natively from Eurasia. It has a milky-sap that is disagreeable for livestock to eat. A parachute is appended to the long slender seed.
Buried underground its lifespan will be determined by forces of the earth. Its shell will be a plant matter and plastic polymer combination that will erode in about ten years. The mortality of this integral part of the project seems to be a locus of control. In actuality it is a beckoning of other forces to carry on the work started by this project, whether it is humans, other plants, nature, artificial intelligence, cyborgs, or even extraterrestrials. As mentioned before the ibot will function on bottom up design, which for the necessary functions it will be truly intelligent. Any other intelligent machines of the future may access the ibot in a somewhat similar way that humans do by proposing alterations in DNA that are symbiotic. Of course, what a machine may think as symbiotic may differ from what humans think, but it should work towards similar goals. This project in part is an attempt towards aesthetics for the machine. Part II of this project will involve training plants to communicate and also contribute to their evolution in a semi-direct manner that transcends Darwinism.
Conducting the production plant for making nanobots will be the ibot's first task. It will be given knowledge of current production methods and then asked to propose a schematic and materials for the nanobot production plant. The ibot will use its language and DNA structuring intelligence to create this part of itself. From there humans and cyborgs will collaborate in conceiving the actual construction of the tiny factory.
This assembly section of the ibot is to be connected to the initial western salsify by the roots. By placing a large quantity of minerals on the top of the ibot very close to the initial western salsify the roots will be attracted to the nanobot transportation tube. The tube will be clear, thus not tunnel-like, yet this process could only be seen underground.
Once, the initial western salsify has died the ibot will report this information through the network it is using (most likely an internet type device).
The ibot will receive solar power from the sun during the day, wind power during the night, and geothermal power plus Earth's vibrations all the time.
As previously mentioned a conglomeration of people, cyborgs, AI, and noise will be the focus of how the DNA is synthesized. There are of course many environmental factors that predicate how DNA can be symbiotic, but that aspect is left to those in the environment. This dimension of the project is merely another of the renegotiations with our surroundings in a manner that makes the word control empty.
Upon receiving the input the ibot will begin the process of producing new DNA structures. Using the references to identify differences the ibot will compare DNA structures in an attempt to discover what DNA does what. An example: if two plants' identifiers are very similar and the DNA structures are similar except for one or two differences the ibot would have little difficulty in discerning what part of the DNA structure does what. This is similar to what scientists do at present. One of the main differences, discussed here, is the identifiers of the DNA structures that are used.
So, how the ibots intelligence will work is that say one person proposes that orange flowers release a compound into the air that neutralizes excess carbon dioxide is symbiotic. First the ibot will search its banks of language and interpret whether this idea may be symbiotic. Then if it is the ibot will take the information reported by the nanobots (the electrical and magnetic readings associated with the DNA also to associate to what it is. So, even though the DNA may be the same between two organisms, two nanobots will send identifiers suggesting otherwise. The ibot and nanobots will have their own language that identifies what DNA structure goes with what organism. This will then be interpreted into traditional language for reference mentioned in other parts of the project.) and assemble it in a way that allows for modification towards the perfect DNA. The likelihood of an individual's idea being proposed to the DNA structure being worked on is slim, but possible. The way the ibot picks proposals is in an oscillatory nature and sends them out according to the nature of the plants seasonality (by accessing its linguistics). An example would be: there are ten thousand people who want an orange flower, one hundred who want a root that makes potatoes (if the DNA structure is available and referenced correctly), and one thousand people who want fluorescent stems. The oscillation determiner will most likely pick the group of ten thousand. At the time of picking a proposal the ibot will choose accordingly and send it to a nanobot six months after it has been seeded, as the initial western salsify is biannual (this seasonality can of course be changed and thus referenced by the linguistic capability of the ibot).
If technocratic ideals are valued in the future it will take approximately a generation for the project to be realized. This would involve persons at the top of their fields devoting a lot of their time to this project. The systems art emerging at present leads me to believe that great scientific achievements will be recognized by the emerging scientific community. It will take some time though before scientists see the value of artists, and in some cases vice versa . Ultimately it will take a revolution for the arts and sciences to be valued in a similar respect. Assuming this is so, an exponentially growing network of non-conformist minds working in fields related to my project will do what would take a few people a century or so. The more people that contribrute the better (Considering the growing efficiency of time itself it will be about seven future years).

*The scope of this project at this time has many technical complexities that cannot be readily explained or solved in a thorough manner. If an aspect is not covered it may be assumed that I will implement current (of the future) technological abilities or apply artistic approaches to achieve functionality.
Part II of the project is to get the plants to communicate their proposals for DNA change.
Part III of the project create extraterrestrials to come and discover the Earth.
Part IV of the project is to fuse plants to humans as a means of interacting with the world. Using (in a symbiotic manner) plants as an extrasensory means.
